In the first Formula 1 race of the 2019 season in Melbourne Valtteri Bottas could secure victory in the Mercedes Silver Arrow – ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton. The Finn was able to put in front of Hamilton shortly after the start and won at the end with a considerable lead (+20.886 seconds) – and at the same time the bonus point for the fastest race lap.
Bottas shows Hamilton only the taillights
Valtteri Bottas: "I do not know what's going on. This was definitely my best race ever. It felt great to have everything under control and I'm looking forward to the next race". Lewis Hamilton: "A good weekend for the team. Valtteri drove an incredible race today, as a team we could not have wished for a better start. The start has changed everything – I still have a lot of work ahead of me."
Ferrari still with voting problems
Behind the two Silver Arrow drivers Bottas and Hamilton Red Bull driver Max Verstappen secured third place (+22.520 seconds), ahead of Ferrari with Sebastian Vettel (+57.109) and Charles Leclerc (+58.230). Kevin Magnussen in the Haas came in sixth (+1: 27,156), ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in the Renault and Kimi Räikkönen in the Alfa Romeo. The top 10 completed on Sunday Lance Stroll (Racing Point) and Daniil Kwjat (Toro Rosso).
For Ferrari, the race in Australia is quite a big disappointment, especially after its strong winter tests. As it stands, Ferrari still has setup issues for the race, which should probably already be turned off in Bahrain.
Sebastian Vettel: "I had no problems. In the last laps I was missing the grip. Mercedes is currently very strong – and the rest is currently behind it."
