[23.03.2019] The electric car Mercedes-Benz eSprinter had shortly before its launch to pass nor final winter tests, this loading and handling, range and cold protection were tested under extreme conditions.
Customers have the same requirements for electric vans as for their counterparts with internal combustion engines. One of the most important factors here: full reliability – even in adverse conditions. This is precisely what was the focus of the winter testing of the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter. For several weeks, the development team subjected the all-electric transporter in Arjeplog, Sweden, to a real acid test. At temperatures of up to minus 30 degrees Celsius, icy road surface and deep snow, the eSprinter proved its operational capability under extreme conditions. Thus, the vehicle has taken one of its last milestones on the way to market launch in the second half of 2019.
On the demanding test site near the Arctic Circle the vehicles went through a number of elaborate tests. Among other things, when driving on frozen lakes, the effects of extreme cold on handling, ergonomics and comfort were tested with special measuring technology. In cold cells, the starting behavior as well as the cold protection of the drive components, software and interfaces were checked.
In order for electric vans to function reliably in hard everyday use, for example in the CEP industry (courier, express, parcel), it is crucial how the vehicles react to different weather conditions. With a range of around 1501 kilometers in configuration with an installed battery capacity of 55 kWh, the eSprinter is optimally designed for inner-city delivery traffic. The tests in Sweden have shown that even with unfavorable external conditions, customers still have a range of around 1001 km.
Electromobility at the Mercedes-Benz level: high quality and safety standards for the driver's workplace
Anyone traveling with a van every day places high demands on their driver's workplace. Therefore, quality and safety play a special role in electrically powered vans. Even at temperatures far beyond the freezing point, the windows must defrost as quickly as possible and the driver's cab can be reliably heated. For this purpose, the test vehicles, including their batteries, were first brought to cryogenic temperatures in special cold cells, in order then to test the starting behavior and thermal management during the so-called cold start. Another important element of the tests: the charging behavior. The eSprinter has a built-in fast-charging function that allows it to recharge around 80 percent of its energy within 30 minutes – a huge plus in day-to-day transporter reliability that has to work reliably regardless of temperature.
Reliable handling in case of ice and snow as well as the winter resistance of all components are indispensable in daily use. This is precisely what the over 30 engineers, electronics specialists and mechanics at Mercedes-Benz Vans have ensured through their numerous tests in Arjeplog, Sweden. The conclusion of the testers: The eSprinter is fit for customer use – even in the arctic environment.

Electric transporter eSprinter at the level of the segment founder
In Arjeplog, the eSprinter went through its last winter tests before following the eVito in the second half of 2019. The new eSprinter will initially be available as a panel van with a high roof and a gross vehicle weight of
3,500 kilograms offered. The maximum load volume is 10.5 m³, just like a comparable sprinter with an internal combustion engine.
With an installed battery capacity of 55 kWh, the anticipated range is around 1501 kilometers with a maximum payload of 900 kilograms. With the second battery option, customers can set other priorities in the deployment parameters. A capacity of 41 kWh allows a payload of around 140 kilograms, totaling around 1,040 kilograms, with a range of around 1151 kilometers. The integrated fast-charging function provides even more flexibility, allowing you to recharge around 80% of your energy within 30 minutes.
The electric drive in the eSprinter, like the diesel entry-level unit, generates 85 kW with a torque of up to 300 Newton meters. As with the eVito, the maximum speed can be configured to suit the intended use: at a maximum speed of 80 km / h, 100 km / h or up to 120 km / h.
