GS YUASA informs: The difference between AGM and EFB car batteries
Dsseldorf, May 2019 – To meet the growing demands of high-performance vehicles, GS YUASA has developed two series of car batteries within the YBX series – the AGM 9000 series batteries and the 7000 series EFB batteries.
Dsseldorf, May 2019 – To meet the growing demands of high-performance vehicles, GS YUASA has developed two series of car batteries within the YBX series – the AGM 9000 series batteries and the 7000 series EFB batteries. But where exactly is the difference between the two battery technologies?
AGM batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat, sure-bonded) have a long service life, very good vibration resistance and high cold start values. The batteries are completely maintenance-free because they have no water consumption and are leak-proof. Their design meets current OEM vehicle requirements and they are compatible with sensitive electronic equipment. Thanks to these characteristics, the AGM technology is installed as standard in many luxury cars as well as in start-stop vehicles with increased demands on the battery functions.
EFB batteries (flooded, flooded, also ADB or ECM) have an increased dynamic charging current of + 170% compared to conventional flooded batteries. The cycle life is + 100% higher compared to conventional flooded batteries. In addition, they have a sealed tilting double lid with integrated flame arrester. They also comply with the current OEM vehicle requirements and their technology is fitted as standard in many start-stop entry-level vehicles. Also for demanding applications such as repeated deep discharge, z. As in police vehicles and taxis, the batteries are from GS YUASA.
AGM and EFB in comparison:
EFB batteries have been introduced as a low-cost alternative to AGM batteries with nearly equal performance characteristics. The difference is in the technology – with AGM batteries the acid is bound in the glass mat separator, EFB batteries are flooded. AGM batteries have a longer cycle life and a higher energy density, resulting in a fast motor rotation during start-up and thus maximum fuel efficiency. For example, AGM batteries are particularly suitable for meeting the demands of higher-quality vehicles. These include technologies such as start-stop, passive boost and regenerative braking or recuperation braking, in which part of the energy is recovered when the vehicle brakes.
