Daimler has today presented at the Capital markets day a new sustainable business strategy. With a consistent commitment to CO2-neutral mobility, the company sets the course for a successful future.

“With a clear strategy for the future we set up the company for the Transformation. The costs of achieving the CO2 targets require comprehensive measures to increase efficiency in all areas of our company. This also includes the streamlining of our processes and structures,“ said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and the Mercedes-Benz AG. “This will weigh on our results in the years 2020 and 2021. In order to be successful in the future, we must act now and our financial strength significantly increased.“

The company believes that the premium market for Cars grows in the future in a sustainable and faster rate than the volume market. Mercedes-Benz is well positioned to remain the world’s leading premium brand. The global regulatory CO2 requirements continue to require high levels of investment. The growing range of Plug-In hybrids and pure electric vehicles leads to cost increases, which will impact the return on sales Mercedes-Benz Cars. To achieve the CO2 targets in the European Union a consistent product plan was on the way.

Mercedes-Benz Cars has initiated systematic efforts to improve the cost structure in the long term and to compensate for the expected erosion of Margins. Primarily material cost reductions to support this compensation. By the end of 2022 Mercedes wants to save-Benz Cars, more than a billion € in personnel costs. This should be reduced both in Management and in the indirect areas. With the employee representatives, the company is in close contact, in order to make the measures as compatible as possible. To the strengthening of the Free Cash Flow investments in property, plant and equipment, as well as in research & development will be capped at the level of the year 2019, and reduced in the medium term. Strategically trying to position Mercedes-Benz Cars as a pioneer for sustainable modern luxury and the brand continue to develop. The focus is in particular on the development of higher-margin vehicles in the respective Segment.

Mercedes-Benz Vans is a growing field, supported by increasing urbanization, and digitization of the trading business. In order to increase the competitiveness of Mercedes-Benz Vans, to reduce the material cost and the personnel cost will be reduced to € 100 million.

On this Basis, the business unit of Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans expects a return on sales in the ongoing business of at least 4% in the year 2020 (potential duties) and of at least 6% in 2022 (from possible customs duties).

Daimler Trucks & Buses

In the short to medium term, Daimler Trucks expects a decline in demand in the core markets in Europe and the USA. This normalization has already begun and is expected to continue until 2021. Daimler Buses expects an increase in demand. In the field of business for Daimler Trucks & Buses, the investment and costs pause printing in the coming years. Necessary investments in new technologies, among other things, in a CO2-neutral fleet by electric drives, as well as in the automation and networking of Trucks and buses.

In terms of market share and profitability of the business units of Daimler Buses, and Daimler Trucks North America, which together account for 55% of sales belong to the best in the business. Not satisfactory was the profitability of Mercedes-Benz Trucks in Europe and in Latin America is currently, however, this 30% of global sales are accounted for. Mercedes-Benz Trucks Europe has therefore begun to reduce the variable costs by € 250 million and the reduction of staff costs by the end of 2022 to 300 million€. In addition, the distribution should be restructured. In Brazil, the number of vehicle platforms will be reduced substantially, in order to return to profitability. In Japan, the sales and the After-Sales Organisation to be set up more efficiently.

Global growth and profit prospects, especially the market for heavy-duty Trucks, the Daimler Trucks increasingly concentrated. In the long term, the Truck manufacturer with considerable business potential through highly automated Trucks that operate on Highways between logistics nodes. On this Basis, the field of business for Daimler Trucks & Buses expects a return on sales in the ongoing business of at least 5% in 2020 and by at least 7% in the year 2022.

Daimler Mobility

Daimler Mobility will continue to support vehicle sales. In addition, the fleet business is to be expanded further. Through investments in urban mobility services will be offered to customers with flexible and attractive solutions for future mobility and growth opportunities for the future developed. The business field covers all customer needs, from short-term vehicle use through multi-year financing options. Regulatory higher capital requirements are a burden in the future, the return on equity. The business field of Daimler Mobility counteracts this effect with efficiency measures, and digitization. The goal is to grow in all three core activities are profitable, to increase the company’s value and to pay a dividend to the parent company. On this Basis, the business field of Daimler Mobility expects a return on equity of more than 12% in 2020 and 14% by the year 2022.

Focus on Free Cash Flow and prioritization of expenditure

A solid financial position, wants Daimler to increase the level of Free Cash Flow. Is to achieve a stable net liquidity of more than € 10 billion. To do this, the group will prioritize in all areas of investment and expenditure, to a more stringent allocation of capital to undertake.

The E-Mobility Group Daimler Trucks & Buses launched for Truck customers a holistic Ecosystem for the best possible start in the electrical transport logistics. A comprehensive range of consulting services and the development of appropriate charging infrastructure for electric Trucks belong to. The modular offer includes, in addition to the personal and individual consulting as well as digital applications that facilitate entry into E-mobility. In a first step the markets of Europe, North America and Japan are the focus. The advice is already being implemented gradually with the first customer.

Gesa Reimelt, head of E-Mobility Group Daimler Trucks & Buses: “As a pioneer in the electric mobility deployment, our battery-electric Trucks are already in the world in the intense practice. Thanks to the close exchange with our customers, we understood early on that we must think about the E-vehicle and beyond. That’s why we offer our vehicles on the mission profile and the needs of the customer tailor-made Ecosystem, including the provision of advice and charging infrastructure solutions. So we want to give our customers the optimal entry in the E-mobility.“

“eTruck Ready”App creates transparency for entry into E-mobility

At the Start of the IAA commercial vehicle show-the year 2020, Daimler Trucks also offers the “eTruck Ready”App is a free application that customers can check, what is the use of suitable profiles and routes for an E-Truck. The Smartphone App records the actual travel distances of a conventional vehicle: it captures speed, acceleration and altitude profile along the Route. Important parameters such as the load condition and the outdoor temperature can add to the fleet Manager subsequently in an individual web portal. From these data, the program determines the range and the estimated power consumption of a suitable E-Trucks from the Daimler Portfolio. So a realistic and meaningful-use profile for customers.

Individual advice: Route, charging infrastructure and the optimisation of operating processes

With the App, the determined route data form the basis for the customer advising the team of experts of the E-Mobility Group. The tailor-made advice, for example, includes information on possible route optimization for E-Trucks and the appropriate charging infrastructure. The experts can create a custom operating cost analysis and consider, among other things, public funding opportunities. Customers can make a fact-based decision-making. Also, while the use of electric Trucks, the team of advisors clients on the preparation and optimization of operating processes.

From Installation to maintenance: tailor-made charging solutions for customers

The charging operations for electric fleet vehicles are a key factor that needs to be integrated into the operating procedure. Therefore, a special focus of the consulting lies in the development and Installation of intelligent charging solutions. In close cooperation with external partners Daimler Trucks offers an analysis of the depots. Step-by-step, the consultant team defined, for example, for the individual use of suitable charging stations, as well as necessary extensions of the grid connection. Important factors such as place of loading and the load time are taken into account.

Intelligent Software for the control of the charging infrastructure

In the future, through the use of intelligent Software to control the charging infrastructure investment – and operating costs are further reduced. A crucial cost factor is the electrical mobility in the case of Truck fleets, the costs of infrastructure. This can be significantly lower if the charging device is designed to be the depot of the customer for a relatively low power utilization. Among the other important cost factors are the electricity costs. Electricity rates depend, among other things, to a defined performance requirements at certain times of Consumption. If the electricity tariff specified power is not exceeded at a certain time of day, costs can be saved.

The smart charging software manages the time-staggered Charging of the vehicles or the Charging with a lower charging power, in order to minimize the load on the network connection. The Software integrates the charging process is seamlessly integrated into the operating procedure. The vehicles will be arriving, taking account in particular of your planned departure loaded and then, if they are available.

Global E-Portfolio of Daimler Trucks & Buses

The heavy-duty Trucks Mercedes-Benz eActros with a range of around 200 km is in the context of the eActros “innovation fleet” in the intensive customers in Germany and Switzerland. The first customer delivery in 2018. In the USA, the medium-duty Freightliner eM2 and the heavy Freightliner eCascadia complete also currently field testing with customers. About 140 light Truck type FUSO eCanter are already in customer use in cities worldwide, including New York City, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Lisbon.

E-Mobility Group Daimler Trucks & Buses developed global E-strategy

Since 2018, the E-Mobility Group brings together the global Expertise of Daimler Trucks & Buses in the area of E-mobility and brand – and segment-defined across the strategy for electrical components and products. The E-Mobility Group prepared in analogy to the global platform strategy of conventional vehicles – a world’s unified electrical architecture. So, synergies can be exploited and investments are optimally used. At the same time, the E-Mobility Group offers a comprehensive Advisory service for clients with a focus on the entire Ecosystem. The goal is to make E-mobility also in terms of TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) economically. The E-Mobility Group is a globally active company, your employees work at multiple sites in a global development network of the company, among other things, in Portland, USA, Stuttgart, Germany and Kawasaki, Japan.

Daimler Trucks & Buses: a sustainable corporate strategy

Daimler Trucks & Buses is pursuing a sustainable corporate strategy, and aims up to the year 2039, in the triad markets of Europe, Japan, and NAFTA only new vehicles to offer the vehicle (“tank-to-wheel”) CO2-are neutral. Already by the year 2022, the vehicle portfolio of Daimler Trucks & Buses in the main sales regions of Europe, USA and Japan series vehicles with battery-electric drive should comprise. Until the end of the next decade, Daimler Trucks & Buses will have to be completed vehicle range with the addition of hydrogen-powered series-production vehicles.

The new front-wheel drive, the LP series of 1963 are just a year old, since you and also your short-haubigen colleagues new engines. Daimler-Benz says the 1923 introduced pre-chamber principle, a good 40 years farewell and introduced in 1964 in the shape of two new in-line six-cylinders, direct injection: The 10.8 litre OM 346 and the OM 352 with 5.7 liters of displacement from the pre-chamber diesel OM 326 and OM 322.

OM 322 is replaced by OM 352

In a long-term development work, it is possible to combine the favourable fuel consumption of the direct-injection method with the advantages of the precombustion chamber system.“ With these words and the following note on “year long testing“ the work of the new units. And trying at the same time, concerns whether hard Nailing (at the time injectors, the Crux of the matter for many), or dispel the lack of stability of the new engines.

At least the 126-HP predecessor engine OM 322 held the warranty on your toes. Also 126-HP successor, the OM 352, however, remains of children’s diseases, almost spared, and the OM 322 overall, in terms of reliability right off the bat in the shadows. Three things there are, Essentially, speak for the farewell to the traditional pre-chamber engine: around 15 percent of the new injection procedure to decrease the consumption. Although the price of Oil is at that time a Barrel is still under two dollars, and should not exceed that mark until 1973. However, climbing the fiscal burdens for Fuel significantly. The proportion of tax per litre of Diesel is from 1950 to 1960 almost four pfennigs (the equivalent of about two cents), he rises from April, 1960, with nearly 23 pfennigs per litre (the equivalent of about twelve cents), almost six times and is from the new year, 1964, with a good 35 pfennigs (the equivalent of around 18 cents) per litre more than 50 percent higher. There’s a 15 percent reduced consumption, therefore, is music to the ears of the conveyors.

Direct injection without using the starter

In contrast to the precombustion chamber engine of the direct injection engine does not start. At least as long as the temperature range is below minus 15 degrees Celsius. From then on, only the driver now engages with the so-called Start-Pilot: those usual setup, which is a carbon-hydrogen contributing compound in the intake tract, which causes a immediate Start of the engine. The third in the trio of the great advantages of direct injection is that it developed as a result of more efficient combustion is much less soot than the pre-chamber engine.

Although the engine weight and the bore and stroke of OM 346 and the OM 352 and the power are identical with the values at the predecessors. However, the technology is presented in Detail completely different: prechambers and glow plugs are eliminated. The combustion chamber is now housed in the piston. And the suction channels are re-designed. Instead, in a split combustion chamber, the Diesel is now a Beeline course to the walls of the Piston bowl. Appropriately designed Intake ports have, meanwhile, moved in the cylinder by the incoming air in a Rotation, the compression stroke is amplified again (due to the smaller diameter of the Piston bowl).

Just in this vortex of air the four-hole scramble jets, their fuel, what the standards of the time “an excellent treatment of the fuel-air mixture“ results. “Favorable thermal conditions“emphasizes the work presented in this way also, and were the “the guarantee for a long service life“ .

Both units work according to the same principle, but the Layout of the injection and cylinder heads in each case is quite different: Sitting at the larger engine (by the way, like its predecessor, the OM 326 is a four-valve engine), the injection nozzle centrally and vertically, so it is the two-valve engine OM 352 is inclined, and with a certain offset from the piston center arranged. And the OM 346 comes with single-cylinder heads, the six-cylinder OM 352 sitting in the attic of a single, common cylinder head.

More Freedom From Maintenance

A further advantage of the new engines is that the injection pumps Shine via connection to the engine oil circuit with no need for maintenance. The main flow oil filter, a so-called ultra-fine filter in the oil supplemented in addition to current, the hoist, the oil change intervals on the at the time proud, with a value of 9000 kilometers. The OM 346 – incidentally, like its predecessor, the OM 326 is a four – cylinder is available in two capacity variants: 180 and 202 HP at 2200 rpm. The maximum torque at 1300 rpm and is 608, respectively, 706 Newton meters.

Even the 210 HP for the stronger variant is then to beech, if it is provided with a thermostatically controlled Viskolüfter that is so, if necessary, to the fact. As a driving force in the 10.8 litre OM 346 of the acts in the heavy bonnets and front arms of the German: gaggenauer plant, as well as in the buses O 317 O 317 K. the Interesting aspect is the division of labor between the two power variants: For the medium-haul traffic and gross combination weights of up to 30 tons, Mercedes-Benz offers the relatively lightweight LP 1418 for 14 tons total weight of the motor car, its low weight made from lightweight five-speed gearbox (combined with the lightweight two-speed rear axle for a 9.8-tonne load capacity) and a slender Chassis, as well as smaller clutch results.

Instead of a two-circuit pressure-air brake, as in the case of the 16-Tonners for long-distance transport, the plant provides the 1418 with two-circuit hydraulic brake, but has the aid of compressed air. All in all, this is an affordable vehicle with a relatively large amount of payload. The real long-distance transport steamer LP 1620 is designed for gross combination weights of from 32 to 38 tons. The addressee of the new OM 352, however, are the medium-duty Mannheim Truck with the types of shortcuts, 1113 and 1114, as well as the buses to the O 321 H/HL, and O 322. The OM 346 draws from 5.7 liters of displacement exactly 126 HP, the rated speed 2800/min. Its maximum torque of 353 Newton meters, the OM reached 352 at 1600/min.

OM 352: up in the 80s in the use of

Both engines have a long career ahead of you. The 5.7-Liter unit, for example, strengthened starting in 1966, as charged OM 352 A to 150 HP, comes later, even with 170 HP, and works up in the 80s, not only in Truck and Bus, but also in the Unimog.

Even longer, the OM 346 live incognito, but to a certain extent: in the year of 1967, he adopts, by increasing the stroke from 140 to 150 mm 11.6 litres of displacement brought, the name of the OM 355. As such, he can come up in the beginning with 230, starting in 1969 with 240 HP and has to give way in Europe, however, already during the 70s, the new V-engines from the 400 series.

In the still and all the same until 1994, busily export bonnets-terminated Short, he is a welcome guest in distant countries. Either as a sucker with a 240 or a turbo engine with 280 HP, it performed in these bonnets à la 1924 or 1928 of reliable service. And also Overseas, the Brazilians know, for example, to estimate the OM 355 a lot. There, he brings it also to a decades-long, and achieved with turbo charging and charge air cooling from 1988, not 340 HP.

The ABA 5, which is required as of January 2020 in all new Actros and Arocs in Europe is no longer only available as an optional extra, but where an emergency braking assistant in law – series is installed, is working for the first time with a combination of Radar and camera system. Compared to the 2016 presented ABA 4 the new System can react to people moving and not just a part, but up to a vehicle speed of 50 km/h to a full stop.

And so the ABA 5 works in Detail:

The ABA 5 System detects the danger of an accident with a vehicle, of a stationary obstacle, or a cross, oncoming in the same lane and the current or the shock of a sudden are constant Person, is first of all a visual and acoustic warning of the driver. The driver does not respond adequately, the System, in a second step, a partial braking with three meters per second – the equivalent of about 50 percent of the maximum braking performance. A collision threatens, nevertheless, the ABA 5 can run within the boundaries of the system, an automatic full braking. Finally, at still, the new electronic Parking brake automatically inserted.

Like its predecessors, the ABA 5 exceeded the statutory requirements. According to current EU legislation, the emergency brake assist in the Truck since November of 2018, must reduce the braking on standing obstacles, the speed of 20 km/h, in the case of moving obstacles, a collision is to be avoided. The ABA 5 can run within the boundaries of the system, an automated full-braking to standstill on static and moving obstacles, as well as an automated full-braking on moving people up to a vehicle speed of 50 km/h.

The driver remains in the responsibility

Overall, the ABA 5 like its predecessors is a System to support the driver, minimize the risk of a collision and to reduce the consequences of an accident or to prevent this entirely. The ABA 5 is, however, no System to support Autonomous driving processes that enable the driver away from the traffic. Therefore, the driver is wearing – according to its legal obligation – to continue to any time the full responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle. You mean: He needs to adapt his driving style to the traffic situation and constantly – in addition to all other driving tasks, especially distance and speed monitor.

His own assessment of the Situation in the following, the driver can, therefore, also in the case of a warning the ABA 5 by the accelerator pedal, turn signals, or Kickdown override and thus the warning or the automatic braking intervention to cancel. A full braking is not canceled. With regard to the in the past discussed deactivation of the Active Brake Assist is designed to be the fifth, as the fourth-Generation basically, and so technically sophisticated that this process is only in rare exceptional cases, even useful. In the fifth Generation, the driver can switch off the ABA also not a Hardware switch, rather, it would have to be specifically on the menu in the on-Board computer. In this context, internal investigations of Mercedes-Benz Trucks show that the driver shut off the systems in the rarest of cases.
