A successful car design is like a work of art. With the targeted design language, the eyes are to be directed to the vehicle. That is understandable. Because when buying a car, potential customers are first addressed by the external appearance, as in real life. Fills the look, everyone comes closer: the car, the dealer, the customer. And at the end of the day is the purchase contract.

But how do you make a good design? Anschauungsunterricht is often the motor sport in this question. And in a spectacular way. In the US, BMW repeatedly places an "Art Car", an "art car", on the wheels. Year after year, a new artwork is created. Of course, this also makes it possible to shoot unique advertising spots.

But why look to America, even if in this country spectacular racing is offered? The Hyundai strategists apparently thought so and started an extraordinary project, which is dedicated to the topic "car and art". The result is a vehicle that does not exist a second time. In cooperation with Team Engstler, Hyundai Motor Deutschland is using a third i30 N TCR in 2019 in the ADAC TCR Germany 2019.

This rolling artwork will be controlled in the 2019 season of the seven rounds of the series of VIP guests. Prominent guest starters include former World Touring Car Champion Gabriele Tarquini (Italy) and Belgian Thierry Neuville, currently leading the World Rally Championship (WRC). The VIP Hyundai is out of competition at the start, its drivers can not collect points. That's not so important at the sight of this car. It's about the design and the idea behind it – and it's pretty smart.

"We are pleased to be able to realize this exciting project in the ADAC TCR Germany and I am sure that the VIP Hyundai i30 N TCR will cause a stir," says Till Wartenberg, Director of Marketing and Press at Hyundai Motor Germany , The start of the VIP car in the ADAC TCR Germany is a great way to further emotionalize the Hyundai brand.

But how did this project come about? The special design for the Hyundai i30 N TCR was designed in cooperation with the University of Pforzheim, informs the automaker. As part of a project work, eleven students from the School of Design created design proposals for the touring car's visual appearance.

Out of the top three jury-selected designs, the design by Arvid Esser (22) was voted the winner in an online poll by readers of Auto Bild motorsport and Hyundai Motor Germany's social media channel. Born in Berlin, he is a passionate motor sports fan and initially completed his training as a technical model maker specializing in bodywork and production. He then took up the study "Transportation Design" at the University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim.

This is how the young artist went about his work: in his design Esser chose the Performance Blue, which is typical of Hyundai Motorsport, as the basic color. The N logo was also taken up. The design is also intended to help the driver drive to the front in the race, says Esser. "The bright blue front with the signal-red contrast is very powerful for vehicles in front of you." If a vehicle moves behind the Hyundai i 30 N TCR, it will be unobtrusive due to the dark gray tail and will be so hard to attack. " Very clever. Let's see what the racetrack rivals say.

A look at the technical data is enough to make car fans happy: V8 small block with 6.2 liters, 333 kW / 453 hp, maximum torque of 617 Newton meters, rear-wheel drive – American could the inner values of this sports car well hardly be.

Of course, this also applies to the design of the current Camaro, which can be described as brutal without exaggerating. The sports car is edged, the long bonnet ends abruptly without tilting towards the road surface. It seems that the goal here was to create a front view that would fill out the entire rear-view mirror of the vehicle in front, even if there were still several hundred meters between the vehicles. Chevrolet is clearly in the Camaro on physical presence – fans of discreet performances are certainly not warm with him.

If you get into the Camaro, experienced a positive surprise. The days of cheap hard plastic are over. The interior seems upbeat, and the quality testers at the American carmaker have done a decent job – which one may assume in a car for about 50,000 euros but also. When it comes to connectivity, there is nothing to complain about, a high-resolution 8-inch central screen displays information such as navigation data, features and infotainment features and is the control panel for the MyLink infotainment system. Also standard is the smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The pressure on the start button then causes finally for trepidation, the V8 howls briefly, then he falls into a bubbling, which gives an idea what will happen when pedaling on the accelerator. Then the pony car becomes a stallion, even without a wild horse in the logo. The Camaro struggles vehemently forward, only at 290 speed is over. The six gears can be switched through smoothly – and offer the most driving pleasure, if one ausreizt the respective speed range. This is noticeable in the consumption, 15 liters of the Camaro gnnt at brisk driving style, which is not unusual in its performance data.

Amazing: The Camaro can be moved quickly and accurately on winding roads, although the first impression gives the feeling of moving quite a chunk. This lightness one does not trust the sports car from the USA at first. When downshifting, the active speed adjustment supports "Active Rev Match" with automatic and perfectly fitting intermediate gas.

The Recaro performance bucket seats, available for an additional € 1,900, make this grumbling Ami feel like he's a made-to-measure – not a fine Milanese twist, though, rather the superhero Iron Man. That fits.

The Japanese car brand Lexus relies on design. Not only the new design of cars is in the foreground, but also creative art for a better world. The Design Award 2019 went to Lisa Marks from the USA. She designed a three-dimensional bra for women after a mastectomy. The prize was handed over during the Milan Design Week.

Lisa Marks shines. Lexus President Yoshihiro Sawa presents the trophy to the artist in the form of a luminous crystal rod. She has used elaborate patterns from around the world to make a new lace fabric, explains Marks, who specializes in the combination of craftsmanship and algorithmic design. "I developed the lace bra for women who had to undergo a mastectomy." The three-dimensional tips would increase the comfort of wearing after surgery and thus give any woman the confidence in their new beginning.

Lisa Marks initially belonged to six finalists among approximately 1,500 designers who had run for the Lexus Award. In Milan, the freestyle now took place. A light trophy was allowed to take home all finalists.

It's not long before what a real car designer wants to become: True to this motto, the trainees of the Skoda vocational school for mechanical engineering in Mlada Boleslav have been designing a new concept vehicle every year since 2014.

Now it's time again. The sixth trainee concept car of the Czech VW subsidiary will be a pick-up version of the Kodiaq. In 2019, a total of 35 apprentices will work there, including six young women. With the support of experienced engineers and technical development, design and production staff, talents are expected to turn the SUV into a two-door pick-up. The vehicle will be presented to the public in June 2019.

Incidentally, the first trainee concept car was the Citijet based on the Skoda Citigo, followed by the Fabia pickup Funstar. The Rapid Spaceback was the inspiration behind the construction of the Atero Coupé. In 2017, again from a Citigo, the electric trainee Car Element, in 2018, the trainees presented with the Sunroq a convertible version of the compact SUV Karoq. Each of these vehicles is intended to illustrate the creativity of the junior staff and to show what opportunities an education at the Skoda Academy opens, the car maker says.

Car building is an art. And sometimes a science for itself. It all starts with a few strokes on a sheet of white paper. From the first creative designs to the perfect design, a lot of time goes by. This meticulous approach is understandable. Eventually, the so-called "point of no return" is reached, ie the point from which there is no way back. In other words, the heads of car manufacturers give the green light, the newly created vehicle may go into production.

Japanese craftsmanship in particular enjoys an extraordinary reputation worldwide. The highest level is the title of a Takumi master craftsman. He has special craftsmanship and artistic skills coupled with perfectionism and a special passion for what he does.

But the way to the "master" is a long one. For only those who have refined their artistry for 60,000 hours, is a "Takumi". This equates to 30 years with 250 eight-hour working days each. Exactly 30 years will be car maker Lexus old. This round anniversary honors the noble Toyota daughter with a documentary. In it Lexus goes on the track of Takumi masters in times of artificial intelligence. The documentary will be available worldwide from 19 Mar 2019 on Amazon Prime Video.

A special feature of the film also has to offer: In addition to the regular 54 -minute version, there is online (www.takumi-craft.com) a so-called "60,000 -hour-section" in which the audience witnesses endless repetitions, with which the Craftsmen continue to refine their art.

In interviews with international experts on craftsmanship and artificial intelligence, the film explores how society can recognize and preserve craft created by humans while developing machines that operate more accurately and faster than humans would ever be able to do.

"There is a lack of real attention these days because we all believe we never have enough time," says Nora Atkinson, craftsmanship curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. "The circle of artisans who spend many hours perfecting their art will shrink."

"Since the founding of Lexus 30 years ago, Takumi's mission statement has been at the heart of our brand," says Spiros Fotinos, marketing director of the carmaker. To celebrate the brand's anniversary, they wanted to capture the essence of Takumi and this 60,000-hour journey in a film, Fotinos continued.

True craftsmanship has also inspired the sly heads that stand behind the compact SUV Lexus UX. Responsible for the development of this model is the Japanese engineer Chika Kako. Their goal was to develop a new kind of crossover: a model that is strong and robust, but packed in stylish design and should offer the highest agility, says the manufacturer.

The model aims to arouse emotions, stresses Chika Kako. The strategy: When potential customers see the Lexus UX on the street for the first time, they should say, "Wow, what a cool car!" Once they are attracted to design, they should experience the innovative technologies, Japanese craftsmanship and agile performance. And who knows: Maybe the spirit of a Takumi master will also be with you a bit.
