Exhaust and pollutant measurements are not just a topic for test companies like TV since the diesel scandal. With a modern high-tech system, the TV Rheinland has brought the technology center Lambsheim up to date.

"The reason for the conversion was the new EU WLTP regulation," explains Jiri Vejsada, head of the exhaust laboratory at the Lambsheim Technology Center. A modernization of existing technology was not possible due to the new requirements, so that a complete exchange of the test had to be made. Several million euros have flowed into the system, so that it is fit for the future.

On behalf of the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the specialists of TV Rheinland carry out exhaust and pollutant measurements as well as measurements of fuel consumption and – in the case of electric cars or hybrids – energy consumption values. On the one hand, this may include the review of new developments, but may also extend to vehicles already approved by the KBA.

The areas of application for a laboratory as in Lambsheim are varied: Legal opinions in disputes about the consumption values are also part of the area of responsibility of the engineers. 30 specialists work in the technology center near Frankenthal.

In addition to the laboratory tests on the exhaust-gas roll test stand, which all take place at 23 degrees Celsius and around 45 percent humidity, the WLTP procedures in force since 1 September 2017 also include measurements under real conditions. Here, among other things, specifications regarding the duration of the test drive, but also, for example, the height meter to observe, explains laboratory chief Vejsada. A ride takes just over 90 minutes, depending on traffic – it can not be shorter than one and a half hours, otherwise the entire exam, which consists of numerous exam points, is "invalid" – invalid.

The specifications are so strict that customers are provided with realistic data, for example with regard to consumption and CO2 values. Consumer protection is in the foreground, so regulations have been developed for the EU. For the test drives, the engineers of TV Rheinland install the so-called PEMS on the vehicle, the "Portable Emissions Measurement System", which collects data within the specified frame while driving.

The TV Rheinland remains true to its founding idea: as a neutral third party to ensure security and transparency and to help refine existing technologies.

3The cat has long been out of the bag

mid Berlin – Clia Martin vom Viessmann At the same time Jaguar eTrophy Team Germany promotes e-mobility and is currently the second best rookie in her series for women in motorsport. jaguar

The formula E has demonstrated that exciting motorsport can be offered with electrically powered racing cars. Since this season, the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy must prove that this is possible even with close-to-production electric cars.

The formula E has demonstrated that exciting motorsport can be offered with electrically powered racing cars. Since this season, the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy must prove that this is possible even with close-to-production electric cars.

For a weekend, Berlin was the capital of e-mobility. For the Formula E and its supporting program, the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, guested on the Tempelhof field. Where 70 years ago Luftbrücke supplied isolated Berlin with food, today the bridge to sustainable mobility is to be beaten – and for politicians and car manufacturers it is currently battery-electric.

And because automobiles have always been tailored to sheet metal emotions, the somehow clinically-seeming electric cars due to the lack of Motorgebrabbels of course, something lustful to be breathed – and that's always good with race wins.

Although almost all major manufacturers have engaged in Formula E or announced their involvement, Jaguar may well be at the forefront of this field: the British are not just racing for the electric formula cars, they are equal to their I-Pace established its own racing series. This is courageous and groundbreaking – because here shows how far e-cars are now, and that they still limits the range limits, even if this is in the production car after WLTP- everyday 470 kilometers.

Jrgen Vogel, avowed Jaguar fan, brand ambassador and I-Pace driver, talks about the quiet in the e-car and the special driving feeling. That's what his little daughter loves, too, for which every drive in the electric car is true relaxation.

Clia Martin from Viessmann Jaguar eTrophy Team Germany is not as comfortable in I-pace as Vogel. The 27-year-old Frenchwoman has to assume the role of ambassador for two difficult topics: woman driving a race car and promoting e-mobility.

Martin has already proved that she will not be beaten down by difficult situations: she was the first woman in a race in Saudi Arabia to compete in the first race of the season in Riyadh together with her British colleague Katherine Legge of Team Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

In Berlin, Celia took second place in the junior ranking Pro Am, finishing in eighth overall in the overall field. And with Jaguar once again proved that electric cars are anything but Spabremsen. Thousands of enthusiastic spectators were able to experience this live on site.

Although he is the first production car of the new ID family of VW, he still carries the "3" in the name: the ID.3. From now on, the pre-announcement is running for an exclusive special series.

All good things come in threes, you might have thought in Wolfsburg when the decision was made to name the Stromer, which is called ID.3. It should refer to the third letter in the alphabet and thus to the C-segment – compact class. Here is the latest VW settled. But it should also be perceived as the third milestone in the company's history, after the Beetle and the Golf. Both are known to have each founded a new era of mobility and left a lasting mark on generations of motorists. The ID.3 thus follows in huge footsteps – in the remaining skepticism about electric cars, especially in the home market Germany, it is a mammoth task to build on the successes of the godfathers.

"We start with the ID.3 from the middle, the brand core of Volkswagen, in which the majority of the models and the sales volume can be found." The number 3 also signals upgradeability to the segments above and below, we have a lot in the Pipeline, "says Jürgen Stackmann, Brand Director for Sales and Marketing, about the new model and its type designation. By 2025, Volkswagen wants to be number 1 in the world of e-cars worldwide.

Jürgen Strackmann: "We are starting a new chapter for Volkswagen here today in Berlin, which is a very important day for our Group and many of our customers would already opt for an e-vehicle if there was a corresponding offer We are now launching the production of electric vehicles in mass production with the Volkswagen ID family, and we want to change mobility in the coming years. " All new Volkswagen electric vehicles will be named ID in the future. Strackmann explains: "This is a symbol of our future." ID.3 for the first model means we start in the middle of our range, our model range, the ID.3 will get exterior dimensions like our Golf, inside the car will be totally spacious This is made possible by the use of a completely new platform. "

The ID.3 is an important building block in the group's electric offensive – it is the E-car for the people. It should cost less than 30,000 euros, and be fully suitable for everyday use with ranges from 330 to 550 kilometers. For loyal or new customers who want to venture the step into the electrified future with VW, offer the Wolfsburg an exclusive, limited to 30,000 vehicles Pre-booking special edition called ID.3 1ST with more extensive standard equipment, the immediately after payment of 1,000 Euro registration fee can be pre-ordered. The ID.3 1ST has a range of 420 kilometers to WLTP and costs under 40,000 euros in Germany. For this purpose, VW will spend a year providing free of charge electricity of up to 2,000 kWh on all public charging stations that can be used via the WeCharge charging app, as well as on the Europe-wide fast charging network "Ionity", in which Volkswagen is involved.

The production of the ID.3 1ST will start at the end of 20198 and VW will begin shipping in mid-2020. At moderate prices the Wolfsburg want to produce up to 100,000 vehicles per year.

For many experts, there is no way around the fuel cell when it comes to the question of the mobility of the future in passenger cars and the transport industry. Bosch is now entering series production of the small power plants. Support comes from Sweden.

Fuel cell vehicles are electric vehicles that generate their electricity on board. Hydrogen is converted into electrical energy. Bosch sees long-term potential in the billions with its mobile fuel cell technology business and expects that by 2030, one fifth of all electric vehicles worldwide will use fuel cells on board. The technology company focuses on the further development and production of so-called stacks, which form the heart of a fuel cell. In 2022, the first production-ready components are to be available.

"With all its power and expertise, Bosch opens up the possibility of our fuel cell technology to gain a foothold in the automotive market, and Bosch is the best partner we can imagine," says Powercell CEO Per Wassn, a Bosch partner from Sweden in mass production.

How long does it take to charge the batteries? This is a key issue when it comes to electric cars. Hyundai and Webasto are now offering a brisk flair for domestic use, which is also affordable.

The Wallbox Webasto Pure for 595 Euro delivers up to 32 ampere charging current. As a result, for example, the charging process for an Ioniq Elektro of 12.5 hours at the domestic 220 volt outlet is reduced to only four and a half hours. That's 2.8 times faster.

According to Hyundai, Webasto is already offering a site analysis for 95 euros before the installation, during which a local technician will check the electrical connections and the conditions for the installation, thereby precluding any future system overload or damage.

Hyundai continues to drive forward the electrification of its fleet of vehicles. After the Tucson 2.0 CRDi Mildhybrid, the Korean company will launch the second model of this series with 48-volt technology in the summer of 2019.

The Tucson 1.6 CRDi mild hybrid makes 130 kW / 136 hp. The average fuel consumption is Hyundai with 4.4 to 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers. The CO2 emissions are 117 to 130 g / km. According to the automaker, the system includes a 48-volt battery, a mild hybrid starter generator and a DC-DC converter that connects the conventional 12-volt electrical system to the 48-volt system.

And there is also a bit of wind in the back: The electric starter generator is to support the diesel engine with up to 12 kW and an additional torque of 55 Newton meters. If the driver gives just "moderate" gas, the 48-volt generator should relieve the diesel and use the energy from the 0.44 kWh large lithium-ion polymer battery, which is stowed under the boot floor.

Hyundai promises to reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to seven percent according to WLTP, given 48-volt technology. The start-stop function is already activated at 30 km / h. So the diesel shuts down earlier than with conventional start-stop systems, say the engineers and call as an example from the daily traffic the rolling to a red traffic light.

In addition to the topic of coverage, costs also play a decisive role for e-cars. Because Stromer still are despite the state premium still significantly more expensive than their Combustion counterparts. But how does the overall balance develop over five or ten years?

This question is Autobutler.de, the online marketplace for car repairs, pursued. For this purpose, the acquisition and maintenance costs of passenger cars with comparable features from three vehicle segments were analyzed for ten years each.

A VW Up and a Golf with power and gasoline propulsion were examined, from the upper class a Porsche Panamera 4S and a Tesla Model S Long Range. Clear case: Especially in the micro-car department, e-cars are currently still around 50 percent more expensive than burners.

In the compact segment, the difference is only about 28 percent. Inverted world in the luxury class: Here the Porsche outperforms the Tesla by around 24 percent. In terms of upkeep, e-mobiles of all sizes – with the exception of insurance – are ahead in all areas.

Conclusion of Autobutler: "Taking into account acquisition and maintenance costs, an electric car in the micro and compact class after five years is still around ten percent more expensive than a gasoline engine with similar performance." After ten years, however, the costs in the compact car class would have been more or less balanced, and the compared e-mini car would be even less than three percent cheaper.

And the upper-class Stromer? He is in the lead during the entire period – at least as far as the costs are concerned.

The article "Are e-cars cheaper in the long term?" was on 24.04.2019 in the category Environment by Rudolf Huber with the keywords Car, electric car, costs, comparison, environment, released.
